Cephas Shava in Mwenezi
09 Feb 2017 - MWENEZI – There is growing public concern with the continued closure of the paediatric (Paeds) ward at Neshuro District Hospital two weeks after water shortages worsened at the hospital.
Although Mwenezi District Medical Officer (DMO); Dr Itai Matibiri could not immediately comment as he asked for emailed questions, a visit to the hospital last week showed the problems that have been going on over the past two weeks.
Children were admitted in some of the female wards.
A nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity said the hospital had scaled back on admissions following an order by Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Dr Amadeus Shamu to shut the Paeds section.
"The PMD came here almost a week ago and ordered the closure of Paeds due to inadequate water supply from Zinwa.
"Sometimes we do go for three weeks without receiving any drop of water. So we were ordered to admit only critically ill patients. The number of patients who are being admitted has dropped and children are now sharing wards with ladies," said the nurse.
The district Civil Protection Unit (CPU) is understood to have convened last Thursday and resolved to mobilise donations so as to end the crises at the hospital.
The hospital's laundry department is also another area that is said to be in a sorry state as washing machines are reportedly down with workers reportedly hand-washing hospital linen.news
