Itai Muzondo in Gweru
09 March 2017 - GWERU – The City of Gweru will today (Thursday) choose a new mayor to replace Hamutendi Kombayi who was fired by Local Government Minister, Savior Kasukuwere, after being found guilty of abuse of office.
Council will also replace the late Deputy Mayor, Artwell Matyorauta who died last year.
Chairman of the outgoing commission which has been running council affairs; Tsunga Mhangami confirmed the development to TellZim News.
"We are scheduled to hold a special council meeting this week where the new mayor will be chosen. This week will be my last week in town.
"I did my best but it is up to the residents to give a rating because they know how the city has been and how it is at the current moment," said Mhangami.
Simon Chipukira and Charles Simbi of Zanu PF are eying the mayoral and deputy mayoral posts whereas MDC-T's Charles Chikozho and Willard Ndaguta are also seeking to win the same posts.
A confident Chikozho told TellZim News they are going win the posts and deliver good services to the people.
"This is no election. How can a team of six beat ten councillors? I have trust in my team since we have been fighting together for the past 19 months. I have targets to restore Gweru to sanity and improve revenue collection," said Chikohzo.
No comment could be obtained from Chipukira and Simbi, with the latter continuously saying he was in a meeting.
Meanwhile, a defiant Kombayi on Tuesday said he had successfully filed a court application to challenge his dismissal.
"Yes, we have successfully filed our challenge against the dismissal and more information will be communicated in due course," said Kombayi's lawyer; Brian Gundu.local
