28 April 2017, ZVISHAVANE - Newly-promoted women soccer side Zvishavane Pirates have appealed for corporate sponsorship to enable them to become the most formidable women soccer club.
Speaking to TellZim News, club chairperson and co-founder Placida Brown said the main aim of the project is to empower the girl child.
"Our objective is to prove to the world that what men can do, women can also do. We have a lot of talent here in Zvishavane that needs to be nurtured. If we get sponsorship, I tell you the sky is the limit for these young girls.
"We are saying business women should take the lead in promoting these girls and the rest of the business community should also do exactly what they do when they sponsor men's football teams," said Brown.
The team is guided by two coaches, co-founder Lindiwe Ndlovu and former Zimbabwe Saints coach Admore Sibanda.
The duo said the so-called big teams with a long history in the women's premier soccer league should brace themselves for many surprises.
"We are not in the league just to make numbers but we are there to compete for honours. Those who want to underrate us may do so but at their own peril," said Sibanda.
Team captain, 20-year-old Leonorah Ndlovu was also very optimistic about the team's future and its prospects for rapid growth.
'I am happy that we have made the first step to the top flight. This is an opportunity to showcase our talents. Who knows maybe, in the near future, we will be in for selection to play in the women's national team," said Ndlovu.sport
