As their school motto 'Be Good' goes, Mashoko High School has proved that it is a sporting giant after its under 17 soccer team withstood stiff competition at the just-ended National Association of School Heads (NASH) games to emerge victorious with a two nil defeat over Cheziya High School in the finals.
Masvingo province was represented by Mashoko High and Pamushana High in the games that were played in Hwange, but the latter crumbled in the quarter finals, leaving the Mashoko High boys on their own to prove their worth.
Presenting the trophy at the provincial education offices on Tuesday, Mashoko High School head Tranos Mbwirire said he was happy with the spirited effort put by the boys to win the tournament.
"We went, we played and we won. That is what we had always wanted and we achieved that through hard work and dedication. We are pleased as we have put the name of the school and province on the map and we are proud and humbled to be associated with this province," said Mbwirire.
Masvingo Provincial Education Director (PED) Zedias Chitiga praised Mashoko High for doing the province proud, saying there were expectations for greater things at the National Youth Games to be held in Hwange from August 17 - 27.
"I am very excited with the accomplishment made by Mashoko High. They have made us a winning province and we are confident they will continue to do so.
"Masvingo province had two teams there to make sure that we take the trophy home and we did exactly that. This is a great day for Masvingo and I am sure the team which will represent the province at the National Youth Games will be reflective of this exciting reality," said Chitiga.
Mashoko High started the tournament all fired-up; winning their way from group stages up to the finals.
In the group stages, they played against Cheziya High, thumping them 3 - 0 and Karoyi Enterprises, defeating them 5 - 0. Mashoko then progressed to the quarter finals where they defeated Chemhondoro High 3 - 0
