… those not registered to vote targeted

 Lloyd Shunje

MUTARE - The Zanu PF cell restructuring exercise reached Mutare on Sunday, with party members who have not yet registered to vote being targeted.

Addressing the Provincial Executive Council (PEC) yesterday before proceeding to a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson, Mike Madiro said the party will compile its own database of members who have registered to vote.

"We received short notice communication from the national commissar that today, there will be a cell-restructuring day. As such, we want you to go back and compile the data of all registered voters. We also need information of our members who have not registered and it must be stated on that list as to why they have failed to register.

"We need to mobilise many people, in 2013 we had 700 000 voters in our province and we won as a result, so we have a lot of work to do," said Madiro.

He encouraged party members to scale up the recording of voter registration slip serial numbers, saying fears that it was illegal were misplaced.

"Do not be afraid of collecting BVR serial numbers from party members. No one will arrest you for that because we will not be committing a crime against anyone," Madiro said.

The PEC meeting was briefly halted after Madiro realised the presence of journalists from different media houses.

He then instructed the secretary for security to take out private media journalists out of the venue, but spared those from the State-controlled media.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has always insisted that forcing somebody to reveal his/her BVR slip for the recording of the serial number is illegal.politics
